Mission: To bring ethical consumerism to a wider audience.

Like the sister site, The Green Stars Project, the goal here is to rate products and businesses for social and environmental impact.

Ethical Bargains is focused on reviewing products that I’ve purchased (at the Grocery Outlet), while The Green Stars Project consists of broader articles about ethical consumption and social/environmental issues.

The reason I focus on items found at the Grocery Outlet (we are not affiliated) is that these stores sell items on discount due to oversupply issues, outdated packaging, etc. This business model helps to reduce food waste and also allows customers to try out new ethical products, such as plant-based foods, at minimal cost.

Products are scored from 0 to 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact.

New trends in plant-based foods and the food tech industry will be evaluated. All products featured here are vegetarian – most are vegan.

There will be no sponsored content on the site so that it remains impartial and non-profit.

The overall purpose of this project is:

1. To evaluate brands for ethics – giving them a Green Stars rating for social and environmental impact – and in doing so, to encourage other to do the same. The goal is to start a grassroots ethical consumption movement that holds corporations accountable.

2. To highlight ethical foods that be bought on discount at the Grocery Outlet so that Americans can be more in tune with the planet, while still maintaining a tight budget.

About me: I have a PhD in molecular biology, two decades of experience as a research scientist and more than a decade in evaluating social and environmental impact.

Please comment on any posts or contact me if you’d like to write a Green Stars review, suggest a product to review, or discuss the Green Stars Project.

The ultimate goal of the Green Stars Project is to encourage you to include an ethical (Green Stars) rating whenever you write a review online. We need user-generated ethical ratings for many reasons.
